One does not have to live or work in the city to know or acknowledge its problems. Perhaps one has to stand back just a bit to see the forest for the trees. None of these descriptions made me laugh. Muriel

Maybe too many of us stood back for too long and now can't venture in. All cities have problems. None are immune.
Enough said on this topic!!!!!

Robin, I really think you are immune from the real picture of what Paterson is today. Maybe being in the city every day doesn't really give you a clear picture. I come to Paterson at least four times a month, there are not too many things that are the same and one would have to be naive or blind not to see the changes on Redwood Avenue, Chamberlain and Preakness. Totowa Avenue looks nothing like it did when we were kids. To say it does makes me laugh. I left Paterson in 1982 after my husband went jogging one night and almost got mugged. He flipped one guy over his back and continued running. Its pretty bad when you can't even jog the streets in your own neighborhood. Look at the town of Little Falls for instance, now that town hasn't changed too much since I was a kid. I could name a few others., but I think you get my point. I do admire your optimism. Would you walk down Totowa Avenue in broad day light? If the answer is no, is it because you feel it is unsafe? Well that is certainly different because those streets were safe when we were kids, even teen agers. You need to step back and take off the rose color glasses. My mother in law lives on Totowa Avenue across from Kennedy High School and shes had her house robbed two times, her car stolen a couple of times and broken into, and she defends Paterson too. She should probably take off her rose color glasses and step back and see the real picture. I think when one works or lives in the city they become immune. My cousin William Gradisher is an Assistant Prosecuter in Paterson, and in seeing what he does every day for so many years, one becomes desensitized. Its really a shame because so much good has been lost. Downtown Paterson is a wreck and its too bad because there were so many beautiful buildings. The only areas that look the same to me, are the ones that were bad areas already, because they couldn't get any worse than they already were. It makes me mad to see what Paterson has become because there are so many great memories.

Does anyone remember Cookie Marchary who lived on E. 19 Street back in 77?
