Hi, Does anyone know anything about the stadium. Every Thanksgiving was the big East side/Central High School football game. When I was about 10 years old I would go there to watch the stock cars run. The guy taking the tickets was my truant officer and he would let me sneak in. I lived on Jefferson St. and went to school #12,then on water street and went to school #4. I went to high school at Paterson Tech. Whatever happened to that? Those were the days but I didn't know it then. Joe Swankie

Hi Joe!
Oh yeah! I remember going there when I was a kid. We used to see the "Hell Drivers" and some kind of demolition derby. The marching band Caballeros used to play there and we'd go watch them too. I couldn't wait to get out of Paterson when I was a kid. Now when I drive through it, I get very nostalgic. The memories are written in the wind. I still go to Libby's every chance I get!

On July 3rd, about 1962, a friend and I climbed over the back wall in hopes of somehow finding the stash of fireworks for the next day. Not a good idea because now I couldn't get out. My friend, who was smaller than me, managed to somehow squeeze under the front and get out. About an hour later a guy opened the side gate carrying several boxes. I ran past and escaped. heheh I remember the football games, the Hell Drivers doing tight donuts and "Flying T's". When the drum and bugle corps were there we would lurk around the fence or sit on the cliffs. Skyliners, Muchachos, Caballeros. Yup! Mr. Marino was Truant Officer during my school years. Dark hat, dark hat, dark car. A bit scary for those of us who cut school. Since tech was county wide, I think tech just got too populated so they built Passaic County Tech in Wayne. I too visit Libby's when I can. In fact we had a small Brook Sloat Projects (BSP) reunion a while back. Check out the BSP site for photos. www.mykard.com/brooksloat/.

Hi Bernard!
I saw the picture you posted of a Brook Sloat apartment and saw "Colonial". My aunt used to live in a place that looked like that. She lived on Colonial ave. You know? That close call you had at Hinchcliffe, I had the same thing happen to me in Cedar Lawn cemetery. I was driving my bike there, it got late and it closed. Oh yeah... That was a real scream. Literally.

If you are a fan and have fond memories of Hinchcliff Stadium do NOT go past there now, your heart will break.... I live 2 blocks from the stadium all my life and have never seen it in such ruins as it stand today, as children growing up in the area we had respect for public property now there isn't 1 inch of our stadium without graffiti on it.... There are no football games, no stock cars, no fire works display just the ruins of a place we all have had a great time and many memories. The city of Paterson have been saying for years that they are going to do something about it but never has.............what a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, Someone told me about this site and what fun it has been to read about old friends and places. My name is Kathleen (Kathy) Miller Prunty and I graduated JFK 1969. Grew up on Albion Ave and while I too could cry at the condition of the Stadium and the neighborhood, my memories are still great. Growing up there gave me a perspective that has served me well.
My oldest son is a sports writer sho did an article about the stadium. If you would like to read it just email me at kmprunty21@hotmail.com. I think you will enjoy it. He saw the disgrace but he also saw the history.
Kathy Miler PS. I remember the name Patty Ramm. I was friedns with her sister, Angela.

A few years ago, while driving past the stadium for the zillionth time, I looked closely at the stadium sign and was astounded to see that the name of the place was/is NOT "Hinchcliffe Stadium" but rather "Hinchliffe Stadium" - not Hinch-cliffe but Hinch-liffe. Until that moment, I had never realized that I and every other Patersonian I had ever heard refer to the stadium had been mispronouncing (and misreading?) its correct name!
The stadium was built in 1932 and named for the then mayor, John V. Hinchliffe (notice the spelling), who served as mayor of Paterson, 1929-1937. (I think that JVH died in 1937.) Interestingly, his father, John Hinchliffe, also served as mayor of Paterson, 1897-1903.
